Texas Homecare was established in 1972 by Manny Fogel, who had previously founded the high street specialist paint and wallpaper chain Home Charm. Taking his lead from America, he revolutionised the UK DIY market, with the introduction of the 'DIY shed' style outlet. Texas specialised in higher volume, lower margin DIY products.
In its final six months of trading, profits for Texas fell by 17% (£2m on sales of £182m). The company had been adversely affected by a recession and depressed housing market in the UK.
Texas was acquired by Homebase from Ladbroke Group plc. Homebase hoped to hold around 10% of the total DIY market in the UK. In May 1995 it was announced that only 26 Texas stores were to close, with limited redundancies. Sainsbury's found that full conversion to the Homebase format was an investment worth making and allowed £50 million for the task.
In 1999, J Sainsbury plc bought the Hampden Group plc, the franchisee of 7 Texas stores in Northern Ireland and 3 in the the Republic of Ireland, which were the last Texas stores to be converted into Homebase stores.
In its early years Texas was famous for its TV advertising sign-off: 'Texas - THE BIG ONE!' In later years Texas used a fictional character called 'Texas Tom' in its advertising. During the early 1990s, this campaign was altered slightly to refer to Tom's place: "Only at Tom's place!"

Protect walls from bacteria with anti-bacterial paint
With the fear of Swine Flu on the rise and the consequent wave of flu patients expected to flow into hospitals in the winter months, tackling Swine Flu is a hot topic. Swine Flu viruses are transmitted when carriers cough and sneeze, and if you've seen the adverts, stick to walls and surfaces, only to infect other people later. This means that people entering hospitals, medical centers, schools and any public building are exposed to the viruses.
An Israeli company Imat Technologies has patented a wall coating used in operating rooms and other sterile environments. The coating seals the walls in a way that prevents them from absorbing viruses, thus significantly reducing risk to employees and visitors. The company is now marketing the coating to any and all public institutions as a means of reducing the risk of Swine Flu infection.
The Deputy Director for Marketing at Imat, said that the solution is a simple one. "The coating is anti-bacterial and has unique characteristics that prevent the viruses' absorption into the wall," Gal Volokh explained. "After conducting tests in the company's labs we decided to widen its distribution to public institutions and organisations in order to fight the spread of the disease. The coating comes in a wide range of colors and can easily be applied using a brush, a roller or by spraying."
The material is already in used in Israeli Hospitals, Medical Centres and Factories.

Use this on masonry walls and you will not only stop driving rain coming in but reduce green growth and dirt build up in the future. Lasts up to 30 years depending on exposure.
What does it do?
It soaks in fully to masonry (bricks and stone) and mortar joints. It reacts with the water which is in the pores and lines the pores with a low energy micro coating which means water cannot move through the brick any more. It’s a bit like a potholer trying to clamber through a pothole covered in butter – no friction!
Because the pores are lined water (and any salts!) cannot move in liquid form. Slowly the bricks or stone dry out and as they get dry they insulate better – up to 30% better. That’s a 30% reduction in heat loss through a wall.
How does it compare to other products on the market?
There are liquid waterproofers like the well known Thompsons Waterseal or Raindance. With a liquid you will waste a whole lot as it runs off and you will have to do it 3 times to fully saturate the surface. This is done in one go, one layer. All the material soaks in and there is no waste at all. It soaks in and is gone in half an hour and within one hour it is working.
It lasts up to 30 years in all but the most severe locations because it fully penetrates the surface rather than running off like a liquid product. You can paint it on exactly where you need it.
This material is specifically designed for masonry and has a blend of silane and siloxane molecules to perfectly line all pores on your wall. Its a bit like putting scotchgard on your carpet, rug or shoes.
Is it good value for money?
More expensive per litre yes, but as you only need one coat (not 3) it is better value per m2.
How much does it cover?
5 litres will cover up to 25 m2 on a smoothish surface. If the surface is rough as a badgers.... then only about 15m2 per tub.
Other info
We'll post up a video soon.
How to Step-by-Step
Remove algae, grime, loose materials by brushing or water jetting.
It is a latex rubber liquid, like a thick paint which has an additive (a dirt dissolver – surfactant) to soften surface dirt. You brush it on, let it set up for about 12-24 hours, then peel it off like a face mask.
No water needed, so great for cleaning indoors where you really don’t want use your high pressure cleaning jet!
Use on stone, concrete, brick, masonry, fire surrounds, walls, ceilings.
Removes dust, dirt, hydrocarbon build up, general atmospheric dirt on stone surfaces
Used in churches and historic buildings (St Paul’s Cathedral!)
Removes soot and fire damage
Used on fire places and stone surrounds
No smell
Non toxic
How does it compare to other products on the market?
There is nothing else like it!
Is it good value for money?
It has to be – it is so easy to use and no mess. Try it and see.
How much does it cover?
A 2.5kg pail will cover you 2.5m2 on a smooth surface or 1m2 on a carved stone or ornate surface.
What is the additive?
If you are cleaning soot or loose dirt – just use easy peel cleaner from the tub.
If you are cleaning marble or slate – buy the activator for marble to go with it and mix it in before use.
If you are cleaning stone or concrete or brick buy the activator for stone and mix in before use.
The activator is a special detergent which softens the dirt.
What won’t it clean?
Wax
Wine stains (it will shift it a bit)
Deep liquid stains on porous stones – like oil on white sandstone.
It is best used on indoor surfaces.
How to Step-by-Step
wipe the surface to remove loose dirt and dust (use a damp sponge).
open the tub – mix in the activator fully if you have this (see above).
give it a stir.
paint on a really thick coat.
allow to dry.
peel off after 24 hours, wipe the surface again with a damp sponge.
This is a roller applied epoxy floor and wall coating with a silk gloss finish. It bonds permanently, colours, protects and waterproofs. Use it on concrete, screed, wooden floors, in garages, factories, on tarmac to mark disabled bays, on walls, in fact anywhere you need a tough coloured resin finish.
How does it compare to other products on the market?
You cannot find a better product for the price. It is easy to use (water based) but tougher than many spirit based or ‘solvent free’ epoxies. You can use this on almost any surface, probably with the exception of glass and GRP.
Is it good value for money?
Any colour you like (choose it from the charts) in 24 hours with no extra cost... you decide.
How much does it cover?
A 5kg can will cover up to 25m2 on smooth surfaces.
A 10kg can will go up to 50m2 on smooth surfaces.
We recommend 2 or 3 coats to get the best finish.
You will need a new can for each coat – once mixed you cannot ‘save it’ for later as it reacts to form a super tough epoxy structure.
How to Step-by-Step
remove loose coatings and dust from the floor – sanding or grinding is best
open both the resin (the coloured liquid) and the hardener (the smaller tin with the white liquid)
pour the little tin into the big one
mix with drill and paddle (link to these in shop)
apply by roller to the floor. Discard any mixed but unused material.
